The University of Houston — Dalian Maritime University (UH-DMU) International Institute is an undergraduate dual degree program cooperatively run by University of Houston (UH) and Dalian Maritime University (DMU). Students in the Institute enroll in either Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering. Upon satisfying all associated requirements, they receive both the UH and the DMU degree in their chosen major.
History of the Institute
In November 2017, DMU sets up its College of International Collaboration as a first step toward establishing degree programs in cooperation with UH. The first program is a 3-1-1, in which undergraduate students at DMU enroll at UH in their fourth year as non-degree seeking students. The courses they take that year satisfy the requirements of their undergraduate degree at DMU. In their fifth year, they enroll at UH as graduate students and earn their M.S. degree.
In January 2018, both sides formally signed an articulation agreement for collaborative education in science and engineering.
In March 2019, UH hosted DMU staff that coordinated the cooperative educational programs and assisted the DMU students enrolled at UH. That year the two schools decided to expand the scope of the collaboration to include the aforementioned dual degree programs in Civil, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineering.
On September 16, 2019, Renu Khator, President of the University of Houston, visited Dalian Maritime University and signed the Cooperation Agreement to establish the University of Houston - Dalian Maritime University International Institute.
In April 2020, the University of Houston - Dalian Maritime University International Institute was officially established.
